Real Philly History, Real Fast

October 13, 2022 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

Come learn about a new book that Sam Katz – executive producer of History Making Productions – calls a “breezy glide” through Philadelphia’s four centuries of history. And that Paul Steinke of Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and Philly author Tim McGrath both endorse on its back cover.

“Real Philly History, Real Fast,” by amateur historian and certified tour guide Jim Murphy, presents “fascinating facts” about Philadelphia heroes and historic sites many of us have never heard before. The 264-page paperback book is published by Temple University Press.

You’ll discover: where the Acadians lived in Philadelphia; who may have been the city’s first nude model; what Philadelphian has more than 40 towns named after him; where the Liberty Bell really received “an additional crack”; what the Philadelphia Eagles’ connection to the U.S. Custom House really is. And more.

Murphy says his is the only book he’s seen that profiles the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Library Company of Philadelphia and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. Tim McGrath, author of James Monroe: A Life, says: “Each page of Murphy’s excellent book contains a fact that will elicit anything from a smile to a ‘wow!’ Billy Penn would be proud!”

Advance registration is required for in-person attendance. The event may also be live-streamed.
