The Archaeology of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia Burial Ground
February 5, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
The historic burial ground of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia was uncovered in the winter of 2016-2017 during development of an urban lot in downtown Philadelphia. Burial records indicate its use from ca. 1707-1859, when the cemetery was contracted to be moved. Approximately 500 remains and associated funerary goods, including coffins and coffin furniture were recovered from the archaeological excavations. George Leader will discuss the most recent research being conducted before the remains are to be reinterred in 2023.
This free lecture will take place in the church sanctuary, followed by a reception in Riverside Hall with live piano music provided by The Jazz Sanctuary. For a modest donation, enjoy gourmet cheesecake by a local pastry chef paired with moscato wine.
