Does a Place Die?

February 27, 2020 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

What Happens When Places You Cherish No Longer Exist?

This question will be answered by a panel of experts who preserve and document historic sites around the world.

In 2018, a devastating inferno blazed through the National Museum of Brazil, reducing the majority of its $20 million collection of artifacts to ashes. A year later, Notre-Dame de Paris sustained debilitating damage during a massive fire. Remarkably, Gloria Dei Church in Philadelphia was spared from three disasters during its 320 years of existence. Likewise, the ancient ruins of Palmyra in Syria have miraculously survived multiple wars and strife.

The program will take place in the church sanctuary, followed by a reception in Riverside Hall with live piano music provided by The Jazz Sanctuary. It is co-sponsored by the Geographical Society of Philadelphia and the Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corporation. Join us to learn more from these experts:

Gabriela Krantz Cesarino, AICP, Planning and Urban Design Principal at Terra Studio LLC
Scott Cooper, Ph.D., President & CEO of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
Salam Al Kuntar, Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Rutgers University
